The Working Set · Going Fractional

The CTO/CIO Pack

No dataset counts the CTO or CIO buyer. This pack turns your seat into an offer a founder can scope and buy, with every figure sourced.

What's in the pack

  • 28 pages, worked through in two sessions
  • Census firm counts for the 20 to 499 and 50 to 499 employee bands, with the arithmetic shown
  • A confidence mark on every market figure, and a list of what was looked for and left out
  • A fifteen-row inventory of what carries over, what gets rescaled, and what to drop
  • When to sell as a CTO and when as a CIO, and why the slash doesn't settle it
  • The one-sentence offer, with a fill-in structure and three worked examples
  • Three engagement shapes with published US price spans, and why the low end isn't your rate
  • A 26-column tracking sheet spec, a sample row, two outreach notes, and three proof rewrites

What this is

This pack is for an experienced CTO or CIO moving out of a corporate role and into fractional work. It treats them as two seats. A founder building a product needs a CTO. A founder running on systems and vendors needs a CIO. The pack helps you name the one you can own.

No dataset counts this buyer. Census shows 654,501 US employer firms with 20 to 499 employees, but not which of them need technology leadership. The only growth figure, a 151% rise in interim C-suite requests since 2021, comes from one talent business’s own clients. So the pack works on finding buyers through company-specific triggers.

Why it is built the way it is

Same sourcing standard as the rest of The Working Set. Every market figure carries a mark beside it on the page: verified or single source. Where no credible source exists, the gap is stated and the number left out.

The published prices run from a short diagnostic to interim cover, and the pack says which kind of evidence each one is. Where a source doesn’t disclose its sample, the page says so.

What it does not do

It doesn’t build your offer, set your price, or tell you whether a prospect fits. It isn’t a security assessment or an audit, and it won’t settle a legal question about your contracts.

It’s decision support. Not legal, tax or security advice.

Who should not buy it

If you haven’t decided whether to go fractional, start with The Fractional Decision Pack. This one assumes that choice is made.

Who it's for

Experienced CTOs and CIOs moving out of a corporate role and into fractional work.
